The Basenji is an African Dog Breed that was initially bred to hunt lions. Interestingly the Basenji cannot bark. There are two prevailing theories as to why - (1) it was bred out on purpose over the years in order to not attract predators to the African villages where they lived. (2) Due to a physical limitation in their vocal cords (their laryngeal ventricle seems to limit their ability to let their vocal cords vibrate enough). While the true reason remains a mystery, the Basenji instead can yodel… Yes, you heard right… The Basenji makes itself heard by a mix of chortling and yodeling.
